While some people may visit Berlin for the fantastic old architecture and the great museums that lie around the city, others come for the more contemporary delights. Berlin is a cultural melting pot with a great music scene, a rich tradition of art and a growing film industry and community that surrounds it. The city is the national centre for a number of industries including information technology, biomedical engineering, vehicle manufacturing and biotechnology. It is the cultural and arts events however that are the major attraction to tourists, with the Berlin Film Festival inparticular attracting a huge audience every year. There are more than 1000 film and television production companies in Berlin alone, with around 270 movie theaters and 300 co-productions filmed in Berlin every year. There are up to 400 different films that are shown at the film festival each year, representing a huge range of the international film communities output and variety. The European Film Market (EFM) is a film trade fair that is held at the same time as the main festival and is the industry part of the event. The EFM, together with the main festival and a few other satellite events are attended by over 20,000 film professionals each year, from over 120 different nations. The festival is a fantastic event for tourists as well as film professionals, and the tourism numbers surge in the local hotels during the event. A lot of international celebraties attend the festival and can be seen at the opening ceremony and at the many industry related parties if you are lucky enough to get an invite.

Some of the other Berlin events may not attract quite the same numbers that the film festival does, however they are still very important for the tourism industry in the city. The Love Parade attracts a huge number of people each year, as does the JazzFest Berlin which has a history going back to 1964 and is considered to be one of the best jazz festivals in the world. Berlin is a vibrant city that has a number of events to help attract tourists at all times of year.
