Great romantic films with poems
I have been to see many romantic films over the years that I have been going to the cinema, but there are only three which I consider to be great romantic films. The first has to be Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere and tells the story of a hooker (Julia Roberts) who is picked up by a wealthy business man (Richard Gere) and is shown the other side of life. He treats her to a new wardrobe and shows her that she doesn’t have to turn tricks to survive. He takes her to the theatre on a private jet, at the theatre she hears lots of wonderful poems on the stage. In the end after initially telling her that he can’t offer her the fairytale that she wants, he changes his mind and goes back to save her.
The next has to be PS I love you, starring Hiliary Swank, Gerard Butler and Lisa Kudrow (from Friends). It tells the story of a girl (Hiliary Swank) who loses her husband to a brain tumour, she is devastated, but to help her get over the fact that he is no longer their, he arranges for a series of notes and love poems (Liebesgedichte) to be posted to her. All of the notes have a task that she must undertake, the last of which is a trip to Ireland to where they both met. It brings back memories of their wedding (Hochzeit) day and all the good memories that they shared. It is a lovely romantic storey, and a tear jerker – nearly all of the women in the cinema where crying.
I have chosen Titanic as the next romantic film, I am not sure that it has any poems in but I know the story is a romantic one. Its about a girl who is stuck in a loveless relationship because her mother is worried about having no money. She falls in love with a boy who is poor and has nothing. Although the story of the Titanic is real, the fact that they incorporated a love story into the film, made it some how more realistic, as you could relate to the two peoples emotions. In the end Jack the boy Rose dies in the water – a real tear jerker.
I am sure that there will be many films with love poems in them, but for me the three above are the most memorable.
